A butterfly, but first a caterpillar

“We all love to think about the butterfly. No one likes to think about the caterpillar. Everyone loves seeing the butterfly, so beautiful and free, but no one thinks about how the butterfly must start out as a caterpillar, and how that caterpillar must liquefy itself in order to become a butterfly – not an easy process! Spiritual practice and spiritual tools teach us about letting the control of our mind break down so that we can find peace, so that we can find freedom within ourselves; then we can take that out into our world. As we look at these challenging times, we think there are moments where it’s too painful and too challenging, and we must acknowledge those moments. But I do know from my own experience, that is where the change happens, that is where the growth happens. And, just like the butterfly, that is where the transformation happens.”

My thoughts on nature have culminated in a realization that the flux and flow of energy is sacred. Biota transform this energy into all things beautiful, including that which we need for our own survival. Energy flows through trees leaving a map of space and time in grain patterns on wood. A tree only builds wood where it needs so as not to have any stress points. It does so in a very efficient way while supporting all life around it; even upon death a nurse log is an ecological wonder. We must learn from nature and approach energy the same way. We must use energy only to survive and reduce our own stress while supporting those around us. We must pass like a nurse log, transforming the energy we have left behind into new life.
