American Visionary Art Museum Virtual Conference
In complement to the American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM's) 25th original (and freakishly timely) mega-exhibition, "The Secret Life of Earth," the free-to-all Logan Visionary Eco-Conference commemorates the 50th anniversary of the original Earth Day celebration and...
Hello Julia,
We crossed paths a bit over a decade ago at an unlikely place – the Papermill Creek Saloon in Forest Knolls. I brought this up in a recent newsletter and it seemed to resonate with a lot of folks, thus with gratitude I pass it on to you.
You coached me in how to reside in this place where my personal life and my mission are blurred, enabling me to ask for support without feeling “needy.” A really important gift. The beacon I mention in the piece may have come from you, maybe not, but it did arrive around the same time as a gift from those spirits who wanted me to do what I am doing. So for the sake of the narrative I also thank you for this.
Blessings on your continued journey, with my deep appreciation for what you bring.

Dear Julia “Butterfly” Hill,
I am Andrew Berglind from Siren, Wi. I am writing to you because in my 11th-grade Field Biology class has an assignment to try to fix a pollution problem. I am writing to you because you are very passionate about the environment.
I would fix land, air, and water pollution by creating an incinerator to burn the garbage in landfills. So it won’t create runoff and pollute the water and land. You may be concerned because by burning garbage we will pollute the air, but I have a solution. We could make something like a fuel emission system (like on new tractors) and use the chemical DEF to turn the exhaust into water vapor and nitrogen making cleaner air that is breathable.
The way you could help me is to promote my idea because you are well known and very passionate about your work. It would mean the world to me if you consider this. Thanks for reading.
Sincerely,
Andrew Berglind
Working with, or through, grief could be a blog subject. So many people are trying to address grief & loss. This can be more than interpersonal because there’s a shared grief in seeing the injury & loss of our natural world & our relations we share it with. Maybe it’s too big to get a handle on? I find myself so saddened by ongoing distruction that I’m concerned as to my ability to function fully beyond the machinazations of working & paying bills.
i know how you feel Ed. Maybe someday i will be able to write about it. i used to write and talk about it regularly. But now, i have nothing left. Time for others to step up because i am stepping down. <3
Ed, i agree. Grief and loss are areas so many of us are experiencing now. Sometimes, it is important to just be with our lives and what is there and allow time to process the grief before moving forward.
Love,
julia
Julia, I remember your experience and I too feel your passion for trees. Especially old growth Redwoods. As a Certified Arborist, I am trying hard to educate people about trees and tree care. You may enjoy my channel called Arborist Blair Glenn. We do remove problem trees but my emphasis is on saving trees and learning about proper pruning. I would enjoy meeting you some day and hearing your story first hand.
Thank You Blair.
i don’t really do many events anymore, but i appreciate all you are doing to help people understand how to care for our tree relatives.
Blessings,
julia
