Our times call for the greatness in us

“I feel now more than ever, the world, our planet, is calling us to lift our heads up and our hearts open. Instead of shutting down, we need to open up. Challenging times call forth our greatness. All of us have a unique place on this team. For me, when I heard I could climb into an ancient redwood tree and live on a platform, I knew that I had to say YES to this calling – because to say NO to it, to close my eyes and to be silent and to walk away would have killed off an important part of myself. So even though I didn’t know exactly what was going to happen or how I was going to do it, the calling was so loud and so profound that I had to say YES. Right now, when we look at everything that’s happening in the world, it can be really challenging to say yes. To keep our hearts open right now is painful — to look at the devastation, the pain, the suffering happening on this earth and with this earth — it’s really really hard. How do we keep our heads up and our hearts open through this challenging time? What I learned is that’s it’s one step at a time and one moment at a time. When I climbed up into the tree, I didn’t know what was going to happen. I didn’t know if I had it in me. But one moment would pass into the next, and through that, I found that I did have it in me. It’s possible for all of us, even in the moments when we feel broken and lost. That’s where the mystery happens. That’s where the growth happens.”
