In this episode YIV’s Holly Skodis interviews Julia Butterfly Hill about how living in a tree for 2 years inspired her to teach others that each and every one of us makes a difference.

Julia Butterfly Hill is an activist, author, motivational speaker, and life coach. She is best known for having lived in a 200 foot tall, over 1,000-year-old California redwood tree for 738 days without ever touching the ground from December 10, 1997 to December 18, 1999. Hill lived in the tree, known as Luna, to prevent Maxxam Corporation controlled Pacific Lumber Company from cutting it down and logging the surrounding grove. She is the author of Legacy of Luna and Becoming and co-author of One Makes the Difference. Julia spent over 15 years being in service to the planet and all her beings. Julia also has been a joyous vegan for over 20 years.

Dear Julia Butterfly Hill, Thanks for posting this interview.

Your life’s work is an inspiration for revealing connections needed to promote climate stability and larger truths. The comments filed this week with the U.S. Forest Service by the Archangel Ancient Tree Archive owe much to your guidance.

The effort to preserve the U.S.’s largest remaining old growth forest (in the Tongass National Forest) is part of that continuing struggle.

Today I was reminded of your story, your time with Luna, and I wanted to see where your journey has taken you. I was living in western Oregon back then and the issues of environmental stewardship were frequent in conversations, and conflicts back then in Eugene. They are becoming that way again, though it is a time for different people to sit with different trees. It seems like our young will always give us the answer, our middle aged will never listen and our eldest will finally understand. I guess I just wanted to say, living in that tree so many years ago made a difference, at least in my eyes and I can only speak for myself. It didn’t solve all of our worlds problems, but it moved us a little bit in the right direction and still does. Thank you for that.

  3. Shunka is a snake!

    Ms. Butterfly Hill,

I read an interview you did with Shunka in 2017. Assuming that it is the Shunka, please be aware that he is a con artist who stole from Earth’s First!

    (Free Speech, yo)

BTW, he was also abusive toward women and was banned from the Arcata Co-Op for harassing females and creating a scene. How you be pro-women and allowed an abuser on your website?

Julia , I followed you after I did a report on the California Redwoods. I have been awed by your spirit and courage. I was married to a wonderful Spiritual person, she was an em-path. I read your interviews and talks about Belize your physical issues. I am frustrated and saddened at the direction we as a people run towards our future without valuing every thing else around us. I lost my wife in 2016 , 31 years of being with my best friend my lover and my partner in life. I wish all the best and hope you find your peace you deserve that. Thank you for the inspiration over the years.
