“Everything in nature operates in systems of connection. So everything has its role in the health of the whole natural community. In wetlands, for example, they are the connection between the larger water community and the land community – they are like a bridge. And just as with people, if we destroy the bridge, the systems that provide that bridge are destroyed.  In order for the human species to survive on this planet, we have to learn how to integrate ourselves in a mindful way with nature. So, in the case of wetlands, it’s about understanding the unique role and unique needs of these areas, and then, instead of making the wetlands fit us, learning how we can fit with them. I think in today’s times, the biggest obstacles are about money and power. Oftentimes, money and power get in the way of thinking in the long term. When we recognize that we’re a part of nature, we think into the future. But money and power sometimes makes us only think of the moment and ourselves. And that, is one of the biggest obstacles to how we live as one with the world around us.”
